Uveitis Treatment In Patiala

What is Uveitis?

Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye that includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. It can affect one or both eyes and may cause symptoms such as redness, pain, blurred vision, and light sensitivity.

Warning Signs:

  • Sudden eye redness
  • Pain in the eye
  • Blurred vision

It can affect one or both eyes and can happen to anyone, including children.

Possible Causes:

  • Infection
  • Eye injury
  • Autoimmune or inflammatory diseases

Sometimes, the exact cause isn’t clear.

Why It Matters: Uveitis can be serious and may lead to permanent vision loss if not treated early. Getting diagnosed and treated quickly can help prevent complications and save your vision.

Uveitis Symptoms

Here are the common symptoms of uveitis:

    • Eye Redness: Your eye may appear red or bloodshot.
    • Pain: You might experience discomfort or aching in the eye.
    • Blurred Vision: Your vision could become unclear or hazy.
    • Sensitivity to Light: Bright lights might bother you more than usual.
    • Floaters or Spots in Vision: You may see small dots or shadows floating in your field of vision.

Symptoms can appear suddenly and worsen quickly, or they might develop slowly over time. They can affect one or both eyes. Sometimes, there might be no symptoms at all, and uveitis might only be found during a routine eye exam.

What is the Uvea?

The uvea is the middle layer of tissue in the eye. It includes:

  • Iris: The colored part of the eye you can see in the mirror.
  • Ciliary Body: A structure behind the iris that helps the eye focus.
  • Choroid: A layer of blood vessels between the retina and the white part of the eye (sclera).

The retina lines the inside of the back of the eye, and the space inside the back of the eye is filled with a gel-like liquid called vitreous.

What is the biggest cause of uveitis?
Possible causes of uveitis are infection, injury, or an autoimmune or inflammatory disease. Many times a cause can’t be identified. Uveitis can be serious, leading to permanent vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications and preserve your vision.
When does uveitis go away?
It starts suddenly and symptoms can last many weeks. Some forms of anterior uveitis are ongoing, while others go away but keep coming back. Swelling of the uvea in the middle of the eye is called intermediate uveitis. Symptoms can last for a few weeks to many years.
How do you treat uveitis permanently?
For people with difficult-to-treat posterior uveitis, a device that’s implanted in the eye may be an option. This device slowly releases corticosteroid into the eye for months or years depending on the implant used. If people have not had cataract surgery, this treatment usually causes cataracts to develop.
Can uveitis be cured permanently?
Because uveitis can happen for so many reasons, the treatments for uveitis can vary widely. There’s no cure for uveitis, but some conditions that can cause it are curable.
Who is at risk for uveitis?
Anyone can get uveitis, but it’s most common in people ages 20 to 60. You’re at higher risk for uveitis if you smoke cigarettes.
Can you live a normal life with uveitis?
If you’re diagnosed with uveitis, you may need steroid medication, usually in the form of eye drops. Uveitis can cause pain or temporary blurring of vision meaning you might need some time off work until you’re feeling better. However it’s not transmitted to other people and it’s OK to go to work if you feel able to.
Can uveitis cause blindness?
There are several causes of blindness, and uveitis is potentially serious eye condition that can cause severe vision loss. Uveitis produces inflammation that can destroy important eye tissues. It is extremely rare, but it is a leading cause of legal blindness in the United States.
How quickly can uveitis come back?
Recurrent: when the inflammation flares up and settles down over months and years. Anterior uveitis is usually recurrent with acute episodes. Chronic: when the inflammation is longer lasting and comes back within three months of stopping treatment. Intermediate and posterior types of uveitis are usually chronic.
What age is uveitis most common?
Uveitis is a common cause of legal blindness in both the United States (US) and developing countries, comprising 10% and 25% of cases respectively. Though it most typically affects patients ages 20 to 60 years, there are subtypes of uveitis that are more common in older individuals.

Type of Uveitis

The type of uveitis you have depends on which part or parts of the eye are inflamed:

Anterior Uveitis

affects the inside of the front of your eye (between the cornea and the iris) and the ciliary body. It is also called iritis and is the most common type of uveitis.

Intermediate Uveitis

affects the retina and blood vessels just behind the lens (pars plana) as well as the gel in the center of the eye (vitreous)

Posterior Uveitis

affects a layer on the inside of the back of your eye, either the retina or the choroid.

Panuveitis

occurs when all layers of the uvea are inflamed, from the front to the back of your eye.

Causes of Uveitis:

In about half of the cases, the exact cause of uveitis isn’t known. It might be an autoimmune disease that only affects the eyes. If we can find a cause, it might be one of these:

  1. Autoimmune or Inflammatory Disorders: Conditions like sarcoidosis, lupus, or Crohn’s disease that affect the body and also cause eye inflammation.
  2. Ankylosing Spondylitis: An inflammatory disease that affects the spine and can lead to back pain. Uveitis is a common issue with this condition.
  3. Infections: Diseases like cat-scratch fever, shingles, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, or tuberculosis can cause uveitis.
  4. Medication Side Effects: Some medicines can lead to uveitis.
  5. Eye Injury or Surgery: Trauma or surgery on the eye can trigger uveitis.
  6. Rarely, Cancer: Certain cancers like lymphoma can affect the eye and cause uveitis.
