DALK Surgery In Patiala

What is DALK surgery?

DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty) is a type of eye surgery used to treat conditions like keratoconus, corneal scars, and other corneal problems. It offers good long-term vision improvement. This surgery is especially helpful for patients with conditions like Down’s syndrome or Turner’s syndrome, where the cornea may be weak or misshapen.

DALK is different from other corneal surgeries because it only replaces the outer layers of the cornea, leaving the inner part intact. This means there is a lower risk of the body rejecting the new tissue.

In DALK, doctors use advanced techniques to carefully remove and replace just the outer part of the cornea with healthy donor tissue. Femtosecond laser-assisted DALK is a highly advanced method that provides precise results.

This surgery is often recommended for people with keratoconus, a condition where the cornea becomes thin and bulges out, or for those with corneal scars. It is particularly effective for younger patients with healthy inner corneal layers.

Why Choose LJ Eye Institute – Patiala for DALK Surgery?

LJ Eye Institute – Patiala is a top choice for DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty) surgery because:

  • Expert Surgeon: Dr. Vikas Mittal, our highly experienced surgeon, has performed over 1,000 DALK surgeries with a graft rejection rate of less than 5%.

  • Effective for Various Conditions: DALK is suitable for corneal issues like keratoconus, post-LASIK ectasia, and Pellucid Marginal Corneal Degeneration (PMCD). These conditions cause the cornea to bulge and distort vision.

  • Advanced Techniques: We use modern methods to carefully remove the front layers of the cornea and replace them with healthy donor tissue.

  • Femtosecond Laser: This advanced laser technology allows us to perform the surgery with high precision, avoiding the need for traditional blades and reducing the risk of complications.

Choosing LJ Eye Institute – Patiala ensures you get top-quality care with excellent results and minimal risk.

How does DALK differ from ALK?

DALK is a specific type of ALK that focuses on the deeper front layers, preserving the inner corneal layers, while ALK can include various techniques for replacing the front layers.

What conditions are treated with DALK?

DALK is used for conditions like keratoconus, corneal scars, and certain corneal dystrophies.

What are the advantages of DALK?
Advantages of DALK over PK include better long-term graft survival, minimal steroid-related complications, and easier follow up, and the ability to use a lower quality donor. In addition, larger grafts can be transplanted without an increased rejection risk.
What conditions are treated with ALK?

ALK can treat a range of conditions where the cornea’s outer layers are affected but might include other methods beyond DALK.

Is keratoplasty surgery painful?
On the day of your cornea transplant, you’ll be given a medicine to help you feel calm or less anxious or a medicine that numbs your eye. Either way, you shouldn’t feel pain. Surgery is done on one eye at a time. The amount of time spent in surgery depends on your situation.
How long does recovery take after DALK surgery?

Recovery times vary, but most patients see improvement in vision within a few months.

Are there risks associated with DALK?

Risks include infection, rejection, and visual disturbances, though these are generally lower compared to full-thickness transplants.

Can you see without a cornea?
Your cornea serves an important function for your vision. It is more than a transparent cover over your pupil. The cornea also handles almost three-quarters of your eye’s focusing power. Functional eyesight would not be possible without a cornea, which is why they need to be in good shape.
What technology is used in DALK surgery?

Advanced technologies like femtosecond lasers and OCT are used to enhance precision and outcomes in DALK surgery.

What is DALK?

DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty) is a corneal transplant surgery where only the outer layers of the cornea are replaced.

How long does a corneal infection take to heal?
Corneal ulcers often improve after 2 or 3 weeks of treatment. An ulcer in the centre of the eye might take longer. If the ulcer fails to heal, or leaves significant scarring of the cornea, your ophthalmologist might recommend cornea transplant surgery.

Cornea Surgeon Dr. Vikas Mittal

Performed 3000+ Cornea Transplant Surgeries

My Approach

1. Whether the patient really need cornea transplant or not. Although cornea transplant is most successful transplant in human body. Still transplant is transplant. If not that much necessary we will not do transplant.

2. If it really needed then we will see which technique is most appropriate for that patient. It is not a blanket that every cornea patient need same technique. So cornea transplant technique very from one patient to another. We see what is disease, type of transplant needed which technique will give highest success rate like 90% to 95%.

3. Follow Up : we have developed a strong follow up system. We take regular follow ups. So that rejection chances or infection chances are minimum.

I think how in compassionate manner I can treat this patients. I think like this is my family member and how I can treat my family member in best possible way.
