Retinopathy Of Prematurity in Patiala

What is Retinopathy of Prematurity?

ROP is an eye problem that happens when the blood vessels in the back of the eye (the retina) grow in an unusual way. It is most common in babies born very early, before 31 weeks of pregnancy.

When babies are born early, their retinas might not be fully developed. This can lead to abnormal blood vessels growing in the retina. If these problems are not treated, it can cause the retina to detach, which might result in vision problems or even blindness.

Regular eye check-ups and catching problems early are crucial for treating ROP. Treatments might include laser therapy or injections to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels and prevent retinal detachment. Early action can greatly increase the chances of saving vision in affected babies.

Retinopathy of Prematurity is rated based on how severe it is, from Stage 1 to “Plus” disease:

  • Stage 1: A line forms between normal and affected retina areas.
  • Stage 2: A raised ridge appears where the retina is growing abnormally.
  • Stage 3: The ridge has extra tissue growing around it, which is problematic.
  • Stage 4: The retina starts to detach from the back of the eye.
  • Plus Disease: This indicates more severe changes, with additional blood vessel growth and damage.

Why Choose LJ Eye Institute – Patiala for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Treatment?

LJ Eye Institute – Patiala uses the latest imaging technologies, like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography (FA), to accurately diagnose and monitor ROP. These tools help us find problems early so we can start treatment right away.

We use advanced laser treatments and special medications to target and destroy abnormal blood vessels in the eye, while protecting healthy tissue.

Our team is skilled in gentle, minimally invasive surgeries to treat advanced ROP. These procedures help remove scar tissue, fix retinal damage, and improve vision.

How long does retinopathy of prematurity last?
If your child has mild retinopathy of prematurity (Stage 1 or 2), the abnormal retinal blood vessels usually heal on their own sometime in the first four months of life. But if the ROP worsens, he may need treatment.
Can you see with retinopathy of prematurity?
What are the symptoms of ROP? There are no signs of ROP that you can see. In advanced cases of ROP, the retina may partially or completely pull away from its normal position at the back of the eye. This is called retinal detachment — and it can cause vision loss and blindness.
What happens if ROP is not treated?
If severe ROP is untreated and progresses the retina will be either distorted or detached. Both of these problems can have a disastrous effect on vision and may result in a permanent reduction or loss of vision which cannot be later improved with operations or glasses, etc.
At what stage is ROP treated?
If ROP is in zone I, or if it is Stage 3 with plus disease, or aggressive posterior ROP is present, urgent treatment is needed as the disease is very likely to progress to retinal detachment.
What is Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)?

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a condition affecting premature infants where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. This can lead to vision problems or blindness if not treated.

Can babies with ROP see?

ROP can range from mild to severe. Mild to moderate – babies see normally for their age and have no symptoms. ROP may go away when the blood vessels finish growing. These babies should not have vision loss or scarring.

How does oxygen cause ROP?
ROP is believed to occur because of an increase in angiogenic factors caused after a preterm infant is no longer in supplemental oxygen and the avascular retina becomes hypoxic. Therefore, the extent of avascularized retina may be important.
What is laser surgery for ROP in preemies?
Laser surgery is the most common type of ROP surgery and uses a beam of light to create scar tissue on the peripheral retina. Using the laser, the ophthalmologist aims beams of light at the peripheral retina and burns, then scars, the area where abnormal blood vessels have not yet reached.
Why is LJ Eye Institute - Patiala a top choice for treating Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)?

LJ Eye Institute – Patiala is a leading choice for ROP treatment because they use advanced technologies like OCT and fluorescein angiography to accurately diagnose and monitor ROP. Their treatments include precise retinal laser therapy and cryotherapy, and they have the latest surgical equipment for effective interventions. Their comprehensive approach helps ensure the best possible outcomes for infants with ROP.

Treatment Of ROP at LJEI

At present, treatment involves targeting specific areas of the retina lacking blood vessels, which becomes necessary only when the disease has progressed to a certain well-defined stage, as less severe forms often resolve on their own. By targeting these areas, the stimulus for abnormal blood vessel growth is eliminated. This treatment is carried out through cryotherapy (freezing the retina using a small pulse) or photocoagulation with laser energy. In rare cases, surgery may be considered to remove scar tissue.
